Types of Asphalt Shingle Roofs

We want to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision for your home. Here is a breakdown of the different types of asphalt shingles you may have heard of:

Three-tab Asphalt Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the most basic asphalt shingle type available. Each shingle strip has three tabs, making it look like three separate pieces. Three-tab shingles are often used on inexpensive homes or for repairing roofs on homes that already have three-tab shingles.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

Architectural shingles are also known as dimensional shingles because they are thicker than three-tab shingles, adding more to your home’s curb appeal. They are also more durable than three-tab shingles and can last up to 50 years if properly maintained. We specialize in installing CertainTeed Landmark Architectural Shingles because they offer the most durability compared to three-tab shingles.

Premium Asphalt Shingles

Premium shingles are the thickest type of asphalt shingle and are often designed to look like higher-end materials such as slate or cedar.

The Pros and Cons of Asphalt Shingle Roofing

When deciding the type of roofing you prefer, there will be pros and cons. It’s best to know what to expect.

Pros of Asphalt Shingles

  • Affordability: Most homeowners like the price point of asphalt shingles for their roof, especially in the event of an unexpected roof replacement.
  • Color variety: With so many styles and colors to choose from, there’s no question you’ll find a perfect match for your home.
  • Simple installation: Asphalt shingles are simpler to install than other roofing options, making them convenient when you need a repair. It’s even possible for a roof replacement to be completed in less than a few days!

Cons of Asphalt Shingles

  • Not Environmentally Friendly: Asphalt shingles are not recyclable since they can release harmful emissions. As the shortest roof lifespan, asphalt shingles contribute a lot of waste.
  • Not equally made: Asphalt shingles come in different qualities and some are better at standing up to Central PA’s climate than others. We’d love to show you what we think are the best asphalt shingle products for a long-lasting roof.

I contacted Bull Run Roofing for a quote on house and garage and they were easy to talk to. Told them what I wanted and everything was exactly as I wanted it. They showed up when they said they would did the job and was done with it when they said they would be done. They use the best materials last roof I will ever have to buy. No mess they cleaned up after them selfs. It was a money well spent. Really nice people to deal with and a great crew. I would highly recommend them. They are great.

Amos and his crew did a wonderful job on our family cabin. We had our old shingle roof removed and replaced with a new metal roof on the cabin, three porches, pavilion, and shed. The team was hardworking in the extreme heat and was a pleasure to be around. They were even able to complete the job in a shorter amount of time to meet the deadline due to extreme rain. Our family just wants to say thank you so much for your hard work and dedication for doing a fantastic job!

Amos and his crew did an amazing job. I can’t believe what they got done in one day. Love my new roof. These past couple months have not been kind to roofers due to all the rain. I get that living in central PA. Amos kept in contact with me. Started at 7:00 and were done, cleaned up and out by 5 on the day he said they would be here. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a roof replacement. I want to also mention it was absolutely no pressure. Just a good, honest, affordable and friendly estimate when Amos first came. Thanks Amos, I will give your name and number to anyone that asked who did my roof. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
